ARTIST BIO & RESUME
I studied black & white photography for many years, experimenting with advanced printing techniques & new ways of expressing images in a traditional dark room. I enjoyed success in my hometown of Chicago with photos of South America & Mexico, as well as the farmlands of Illinois. In 2003, I moved to Ajijic, Mexico.
The increased emphasis on digital photography made darkroom supplies difficult to get, and so I started to hand color my own black & white prints, experimenting with fanciful colors. Finally, I switched to digital photography, expanding on the sense of color which I developed in hand painting, and finally returning also to black & white. Digital has been an intriguing challenge, with all the myriad manipulations possible. However, I am convinced that the lessons learned in developing black & white images can produce far better color photos. Successful black & white photos need form & structure, as well as an understanding of intensity of colors. Combining these compositional concepts and applying them to color photography can make for more effective and beautiful images. Check out my photo tours at: www.mexploration.net.
